Samoa - business -- Review
Bus owners Samoa have a legitimate complaint.
They’re saying that whereas government is insistent on the road switch, they have ignored their plea for help to assist them make the transition easier.
The bus owners are unhappy with government’s order to have the doors of their buses switched to the left. Made several months ago, bus operators were told to have them ready before Monday, two days ago when the road switch was implemented.
According to the government, the switch can be done at minimal cost based on the experience of a bus operator or two who support the switch. From that, they have offered a year of free registration as an incentive, which amounts to no more than $1,800.
According to the latest count, of a fleet of more than 100 buses in Samoa, only 18 have had their doors changed. The rest cannot be used today, tomorrow and possibly longer.
In other words, public transportation will be severely hit. On both islands, bus use will be very limited.
A meeting between Upolu and Savai’i bus owners today will determine their next step. We hope they can come up with a solution to benefit everyone.
