US missile shield talks in Warsaw
24.05.2007
Starting in Warsaw today are official talks on a plan to build parts of a US missile defence shield in Poland. Representing the American side in the talks is Assistant Secretary of State John Rood.
Today's talks are a continuation of the consultations which have been held over the past several weeks. Polish President Lech Kaczynski and Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski are in favour of the shield, but Polish defence and security chiefs have said that Poland would set tough conditions and that "concrete offers" from the US were expected before any decisions would be made.

The plan includes construction of 10 sites for interceptor rockets in Poland, and a radar system in the Czech Republic. The shield is to serve as protection against attacks from "rogue states" such as Iran or North Korea. Warsaw received the plan in January.Plans for the shield have been strongly criticised by Russia.
