Topolanek backs U.S. missile defense
27.05.2007
The Czech prime minister told a summit of 15 European leaders Friday that a planned missile defense system, parts of which the United States wants to base in the Czech Republic and Poland, is vital to Europe's security.
"The defense of Europe against missiles from some states and organizations is a necessary step which will significantly increase our security and also the security of our European allies and neighbors," Mirek Topolanek told the annual gathering of presidents from central, southern and eastern Europe.
The next day some 1,000 opponents of the U.S. anti-missile radar base rallied at a demonstration in the center of Prague on Saturday, police said.
Lower house deputy chairman Lubomir Zaoralek and former Czech foreign minister Jan Kavan took part in the demonstration.
Recent polls show that a majority of Czechs oppose the plan.

The presidents of 15 Central and Eastern European countries have concluded a summit meeting in the Czech city of Brno.
Czech President Vaclav Klaus, who was hosting the meeting, said that uncertainty over Kosovo's future is the biggest dilemma facing the region.
The presidents of Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Serbia, and Slovakia attended.
The leaders did not come to a consensus about whether Kosovo should be granted internationally supervised independence, as a recent UN report has recommended.
