Former premier Silajdzic elected muslim president
2.10.2006
Haris Silajdzic, premier and foreign minister during the civil war against Serbia, was elected to represent Muslims in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Preliminary figures estimate him at 40% of votes compared to the estimated 18% of outgoing president Suleyman Tihic who admitted his defeat. Nebojsa Radmanovic was elected Serbian representative, he is considered to be very moderate; the Croatian representative is nationalist Ivo Miro Jovic, in slight advantage on moderate Zeljko Komsic. The members of the three party presidency have a four years mandate on a rotation basis, every eight months the president changes. Elections were valid also for the first government of the former Yugoslavian republic without international supervisor after the war 1992-1995, for the central parliament and the parliaments of the two entities.

The elections
2.10.2006
44% of the 2,700,000 electors went to vote. Silajdzic already communicated he would fight for the abolition of the two autonomous regions - the Croatian-Muslim and the Serbian region - of the federation, a project which dominated the electoral campaign; Serbians led by nationalist premier Milorad Dodik said they would fight against this project. "Now we have the ethnical groups represented, not the citizens", reminded Silajdzic in a speech before his celebrating supporters, "there are parties with different points of view and therefore we will have to discuss".
