To cross Antarctica by trucks
10.01.2011
An expedition of 10 British researchers set a new record time for crossing Antarctica, said the BBC.
"They have crossed the continent with specially designed reconnaissance vehicle and trucks for about 303 hours,
overcoming almost 1946 km. The expedition formed by scientists, mechanics and travelers passed the road from
the runway to take off the glacier Union to the shelf glacier of Ross between 25 November and 9 December.
In the message is indicated that passage became the fastest of all transitions in Antarctica performed once with a
vehicle. "Now the British group intends to move back across the South Pole to the west coast of the continent to
the starting point of the route." They hope to go back for about 9 days. Then they will become the only
expedition to the ground vehicle that has ever made the transition there and back, "the BBC".

British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is one of the world's leading environmental research centres and is responsible
for the UK's national scientific activities in Antarctica.
The current BAS science research strategy is called Polar Science for Planet Earth (PSPE).
The strategy was based on proposals from staff and consists of 6 integrated programmes.
In addition the competitive Antarctic Funding Initiative (AFI) provides access to Antarctica for BAS
and NERC staff and the UK university community.
